A Very Divine Welcome, Fellow Book Lover!
There’s something magical about having a special place to curl up with a good book.
A spot that feels like it was made just for you and your stories.
A place where the outside world fades away, and the pages come alive.
I’ve been blessed with such a spot once, and I still carry its memory in my heart.
Years ago, I lived in an apartment that overlooked a small lake. My living room sofa became my sanctuary—a place where I read, wrote, prayed, and meditated for hours on end.
But it wasn’t just the sofa that made it special. It was the view.
Through my window, I watched ducks glide lazily across the water.
I observed geese swimming in community, multiple family groups sticking together as they moved from one pond to another.
I saw a goose from one family gently (and sometimes not so gently) chastise a rambunctious youngster from another.
They were indeed a family unit, looking out for one another. The sun would warm the grass near the water, and I would sit there, book or laptop in my lap, utterly inspired by the ambiance.
That apartment taught me something important: a reading nook is more than just furniture. It’s a feeling.

Today, I want to share five simple ways you can create your own cozy reading nook—a space that invites you to stay awhile, to sink into stories, and to perhaps even find a little inspiration of your own.
1. Find Your Perfect Spot
Your reading nook can be anywhere.
A corner of your bedroom. A window seat. A comfortable chair in the living room. Even a cozy closet nook if you’re feeling creative.
When I lived overlooking that lake, my spot was simply my living room sofa.
But it was positioned just right—facing the water, catching the afternoon light, close enough to the window to feel connected to the world outside.
As you look around your home, consider:
- Where does the natural light fall during your favorite reading hours?
- Is there an outlet nearby for lamps or devices?
- Can you find a spot that feels slightly separate from the busyness of daily life?
Remember: size doesn’t matter. A corner is enough if it calls to you.
2. Invest in Seating That Hugs You Back
Comfort is everything. You want a seat that invites you to stay for one more chapter, then another, then another.
My old sofa was nothing fancy—just a comfortable place to settle in with a book or my laptop.
But it was mine. It held me through countless stories, countless prayers, countless moments of quiet reflection.
For your own nook, consider:
- A plush armchair (thrift stores and secondhand shops are wonderful places to hunt)
- Floor cushions or poufs for a bohemian vibe
- A window seat with added cushions
- Even just piling blankets and pillows in a corner can work beautifully
The goal is simple: a seat that feels like a hug.
3. Layer in Warmth With Textiles
Soft textures create instant coziness. They also absorb sound, making your nook feel quieter and more intimate.
I always kept a soft blanket nearby during my lakefront days.
There’s something about wrapping up in warmth while watching geese glide across the water that makes the world feel right.
Consider adding:
- A soft throw blanket (fleece, knit, or quilted—whatever makes you sigh with comfort)
- Plush pillows in varying sizes
- A small rug to define the space, and keep your feet warm
Mix textures and colors that bring you joy. This is your space. It should feel like you.
4. Set the Mood With Lighting
Lighting transforms a space from ordinary to magical.
It creates atmosphere and allows you to read comfortably at any hour.
In my apartment, I was blessed with abundant natural light during the day.
I’d watch the sun sparkle on the water while I read, and something as simple as a duck paddling by could spark an idea or a prayer.
For your own nook, consider:
- A warm-toned reading lamp (harsh overhead lights are the enemy of coziness)
- String lights or fairy lights for a whimsical glow
- A small candle (real or battery-operated) for ambiance
- Positioning your nook to catch beautiful natural light during the day
If you use real candles, please enjoy them safely. Never leave them unattended.
5. Add Personal Touches That Spark Joy
This is where your nook becomes yours. The little details that make you smile every time you settle in.
Around my sofa, I kept things simple. But the view—oh, the view was the ultimate personal touch.
Watching those geese raise their young, observing how they stayed together as a community, seeing them chastise wayward youngsters with such parental energy—it filled my soul.
It inspired my writing. It quieted my mind for prayer.
Your personal touches might look different, and that’s beautiful. Consider adding:
- A small stack of current reads nearby
- A side table for tea, coffee, or cocoa
- A collection of bookmarks in a pretty jar
- Art or photos on the wall above your nook
- A plant or small flowers for life and freshness
- A basket to hold blankets when not in use
Fill your space with things that make you want to sit down and stay awhile.
A Final Thought
You don’t need a lake view to create a magical reading nook. You don’t need expensive furniture or a large home.
You just need intention—a desire to carve out a small space that says to your soul, “You are welcome here. Rest. Read. Dream.”
My lakefront days are behind me now, but the memory of that space lives on.
And the beautiful truth is this: the coziness we create isn’t really about the spot at all. It’s about what happens when we’re there.
The stories we enter. The prayers we pray. The ideas that come to us while ducks paddle by.
So go ahead. Find your corner. Make it cozy. And then let the stories find you.
I’d truly love to know: Where’s your favorite spot to read?
Picture it for me. Drop me a note, or share on social media and tag me.
I want to imagine you there, cozy and content.
With warmth and cozy wishes,
Destiny Divine
