The Case for Withholding Our $1.9 Trillion
The Problem
Black Americans have a reported combined wealth of $1.8 to $1.9 trillion in buying power.
That money fuels America’s capitalist system. Without us, it would collapse.
And that same system uses our money to oppress us.
- Discriminatory banks charge us billions in fees
- Corporations fund politicians who suppress our votes
- Wealth extracted from our communities builds prisons, pipelines, and police
We are the engine. And they are using our fuel to run us over.
The Strategy
We stop spending at companies that harm us. We redirect our dollars to institutions that help us.
This is not a protest. This is not a march. This is economic warfare—nonviolent, legal, and historically effective.
| Instead of… | Do this… |
| Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America | Move your money to a credit union or Black-owned bank |
| Target, Walmart, Amazon | Buy from Black-owned retailers and local businesses |
| Corporate social media | Build your own website or join a community-owned platform |
Why It Works
Past boycotts have won real victories:
- Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955-1956) – Desegregated buses
- Birmingham Boycott (1956-1962) – Desegregated downtown stores
- Grape Boycott (1965-1970) – Won union contracts for farmworkers
Boycotts work when they are:
- Sustained – Not one day. Not one week. Month after month.
- Organized – Clear demands. Clear targets. Clear communication.
- Collective – Not one person. Thousands. Millions.
We have all three. We have the blueprint. We have the power.
What Happens When We Boycott
In the short term:
- Companies lose revenue
- Shareholders get nervous
- Politicians who take their money get nervous
- The billionaire class pays attention
In the long term:
- Black-owned banks grow (lending power in our communities)
- Black-owned businesses thrive (wealth stays in our neighborhoods)
- Mutual aid networks replace predatory systems
- We build the infrastructure for liberation
Common Objections – And Answers
| “I’m just one person.” | One person is pointless. One million is not. Start with you. |
| “I can’t afford to boycott Walmart.” | Do what you can. Move your bank account first. That’s the highest leverage. |
| “This won’t work.” | It has worked before. Montgomery was a boycott. Birmingham was a boycott. The grape boycott worked. |
| “I don’t have time.” | Moving your bank account takes 30 minutes. You have 30 minutes. |
| “What about non-Black allies?” | They can boycott alongside us. This is our fight to lead. |
One Page. One Question.
Will you withhold your dollar from the system that oppresses you?
If yes, here is where to start:
- Move your money – Open an account at a credit union or Black-owned bank today. Link to Bank Fee Escape Checklist
- Pick your first boycott target – Choose one company (Target, Walmart, Amazon) and stop spending there for 30 days.
- Tell someone else – Share this page. Bring one person with you.
The Bottom Line
We power this system. Without us, it collapses.
Let’s turn off the engine.
