Platform Building – Own Your Digital Presence
A Guide to Taking Back Your Power Online
Pillar 3 of The Blueprint for Black Americans
Why Platform Building Matters
You have been building wealth for Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk.
Every post, every photo, every video you upload to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter/X is free labor that makes billionaires richer.
They own your content. They control what you see. They can delete you anytime with no explanation.
Platform building is the opposite.
It means creating your own digital space – a website, a newsletter, a community – that you own and control. No algorithm. No data mining. No billionaire overlord.
Even if you don’t have tech skills, you can start today.
The Problem: Corporate Social Media Is Not Your Friend
| What They Do | Why It Hurts Us |
| Own your content | They can delete your page, your posts, or your entire account without warning |
| Sell your data | They make billions selling your personal information to advertisers |
| Control what you see | Algorithms decide what you see – not you. They suppress Black voices regularly |
| Profit from your labor | Your posts, photos, and videos generate revenue for them, not you |
| Change the rules anytime | What worked yesterday may get you banned today |
You are not the customer. You are the product.
The Solution: Four Levels of Platform Building
You don’t need to be a tech expert. Start where you are.
Level 1: Join Someone Else’s Platform (Easiest – Everyone Can Do This)
| Action | Time | Cost |
| Join the Divine Readers Community (or another Black-owned community) | 5 minutes | Free |
| Participate in the community – post, comment, ask questions | Ongoing | Free |
| Invite a friend to join | 2 minutes | Free |
Why this matters: Even if you don’t build your own platform, joining a community-owned space shifts your presence away from corporate control.
How to do it:
- Go to [Divine Readers Community link]
- Request to join (tell us why you’re here)
- Once approved, introduce yourself and start participating
Not ready to join? Just observe for a while. That’s fine too.
Level 2: Start a Free Newsletter or Website (Medium – Anyone with 30 Minutes)
| Action | Time | Cost |
| Start a free Substack newsletter | 10 minutes | Free |
| Create a free Carrd one-page website | 30 minutes | Free |
| Write your first post (300 words) | 20 minutes | Free |
Why this matters: A newsletter or simple website gives you a permanent home on the internet. No algorithm. No censorship. You own it.
How to start a free Substack:
- Go to substack.com
- Click “Start a publication”
- Enter your email and create a password
- Name your newsletter (e.g., “My Blueprint Journey” or “[Your Name] Writes”)
- Write your first post – even 300 words is enough
- Hit publish
How to start a free Carrd website:
- Go to carrd.co
- Click “Start with a blank template”
- Add your name, a short bio, and a link to your Substack or online community
- Publish. You now have a website.
What to write about:
- Why you’re joining the boycott
- Your experience moving your money
- What you learned at your first city council meeting
- A resource you found helpful (and why)
No one will read it at first. That’s fine. You are building for the long term.
Level 3: Build a Community (Intermediate – For People Ready to Lead)
| Action | Time | Cost |
| Start a WhatsApp or Signal group with 5-10 people | 10 minutes | Free |
| Start a Discord server (free) | 30 minutes | Free |
| Install FluentCommunity, BuddyBoss, BuddyPress on your own website (requires WordPress) | 2-4 hours | $$ (hosting + plugin) |
Why this matters: A community is not just a platform – it’s a network of people who trust each other. That is power.
How to start a WhatsApp or Signal group:
- Identify 5-10 people you trust (family, friends, neighbors, church members)
- Create a group chat
- Name it something clear (e.g., “Our Mutual Aid Circle” or “Boycott Support Group”)
- Post one question: “What’s one thing you’re struggling with right now?”
- Listen. Help where you can. Grow slowly.
How to start a Discord server:
- Go to discord.com
- Create a free account
- Click “Add a Server”
- Choose “Create My Own”
- Name your server
- Create channels (e.g., #introductions, #boycott-wins, #mutual-aid, #local-power)
- Invite people
When to level up to FluentCommunity, BuddyBoss, or BuddyPress:
- You have a WordPress website
- You have 20+ active members
- You need more structure than Discord or WhatsApp
- You’re ready to invest in hosting and the plugin
Start small. Don’t build what you don’t need yet.
Level 4: Build Your Own Website (Advanced – For Tech-Savvy People)
| Action | Time | Cost |
| Buy a domain name (e.g., yourname.com) | 10 minutes | $10-15/year |
| Buy web hosting (e.g., SiteGround, Bluehost) | 10 minutes | $5-15/month |
| Install WordPress (one-click install) | 5 minutes | Free |
| Install FluentCommunity (or similar) | 15 minutes | $$ (plugin cost) |
| Build out your community | Ongoing | Your time |
Why this matters: You own everything. No one can delete you. No algorithm controls your reach.
This is not for everyone. If you’re not tech-savvy, start at Level 1 or 2. You can always level up later.
Quick Reference: Which Level Is Right for You?
| If you… | Start at Level… |
| Have no tech skills and just want to participate | Level 1 (Join the Divine Readers Community) |
| Have 30 minutes and want a simple home online | Level 2 (Free Substack or Carrd) |
| Have a small trusted group and want to organize | Level 3 (WhatsApp, Signal, or Discord) |
| Have tech skills and want full ownership | Level 4 (Your own website + FluentCommunity) |
What to Post on Your Platform
You don’t need to be a writer. You just need to be real.
Ideas for your first 5 posts:
- Why I’m here – Share what brought you to the blueprint. (300 words)
- My first boycott action – Did you move your money? Cancel Prime? Attend a meeting? Write about it. (200 words)
- What I learned at city council – Even if you just observed, share what surprised you. (200 words)
- A resource I love – A PDF, a book, a video, a person. Share it and say why. (150 words)
- A question for the community – What are you struggling with? What do you need help with? (100 words)
That’s it. You don’t need to be profound. You just need to show up.
How to Leave Corporate Social Media (If You Want To)
You don’t have to delete everything overnight. Here is a gradual approach:
| Stage | Action |
| Stage 1 | Stop posting original content. Only share links to your own platform. |
| Stage 2 | Download your data (photos, posts, messages) from each platform. |
| Stage 3 | Change your bio to link to your website or Substack. |
| Stage 4 | Post less. Once a week, then once a month. |
| Stage 5 | Deactivate for 30 days (try the August social media pause in the calendar). |
| Stage 6 | Delete permanently (if you’re ready). |
You don’t have to delete forever. But you should stop building your house on someone else’s land.
Real Example: How I Built My Platform
This blueprint is built on my own platform – my website and the Divine Readers Community.
I got tired of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter profiting from my content while I owned nothing. So I built my own space.
- I bought a domain name
- I set up WordPress hosting
- I installed FluentCommunity (that’s what you’re using in the Divine Readers Community)
- I started inviting people
It took time. It wasn’t perfect at first. But now I own everything. No algorithm. No censorship. No billionaire getting rich off my labor.
If I can do it, you can do it.
Common Questions
Q: I’m not techy. Can I really do this?
Yes. Start at Level 1 (join the Divine Readers Community) or Level 2 (free Substack). You don’t need to touch code.
Q: What if no one reads my stuff?
That’s fine. You’re not building for an audience of thousands. You’re building for an audience of trusted people – maybe 5, maybe 10, maybe 50.
Small, committed communities are more powerful than large, passive audiences.
Q: Isn’t this just more work I don’t have time for?
It’s work. But it’s ownership work, not free labor for billionaires work.
And you don’t have to do it all at once. Start with 30 minutes. Write one post. Invite one person.
Q: What about LinkedIn? Is that okay?
LinkedIn is also corporate. They own your content too. But if you need it for work, use it strategically: post a link to your own platform, not original content.
Q: Can I use my platform to promote the blueprint?
Absolutely. That’s the point. Share your journey. Share the PDFs. Invite people to join the community.
Your First 3 Actions (This Week)
| Action | Time | Level |

| Start a free Substack or Carrd website | 30 minutes | Level 2 |
| Write your first post (300 words) – “Why I’m here” | 20 minutes | Level 2 |
That’s it. Start there. Grow from there.
